For a long time, strong ties with China guaranteed German businesses cheap goods and solid profits. But China has not only caught up in many areas—it has overtaken. What was once a partnership has become a dependency. And that dependency is becoming harder to ignore. China is no longer just an economic powerhouse—it’s asserting itself politically, too. Whether in the Ukraine war, its ties to Russia, or ongoing threats toward Taiwan, China has shifted from a quiet partner in globalization to a self-confident global power. In Berlin, politicians are waking up to a new reality: what used to be a relationship has turned into reliance—and cutting ties isn’t that simple.

Christian Kempenich is the Chief Clerk in the Town Council in a small town on the river Mosel in Germany. He goes to Cologne to attend a family baptism, and afterwards is lured to sample the wicked delights of the big city. He wakes up the next morning in a cheap hotel room with no memory of what happened, but there's a strange woman asleep in the bed with him. Horrified, he heads home with his guilty secret. Meanwhile his wife went on the river steamer to the next town; an Italian tenor has been giving her singing lessons and has amorous intentions towards her, and he takes the same steamer. They stay on it to Koblenz and have to stay the night. The rest of the film revolves around Kempenich and his wife as they alternately show guilt about their own behaviour and outrage as they learn what their spouse might have done.

Hannah hero finds out that her husband Martin is cheating on her. Angered, she announces that she wants a divorce. But Hannah is waiting for the million-dollar legacy of her great-aunt Käthe and a divorced woman will never entrust her family heritage to the tradition-conscious old lady. So Hannah arranges the separation of table and bed with her future ex-husband. Then Hannah and Martin move into Aunt Käthe's villa and play a harmonious married life.
